Services » Broken Headstock Repair

  1. OUCH! Fear not this is a common headstock break.
  2. A good clean break.
  3. The headstock and neck are taped off for easy clean up from glue excess. The crack is slightly widened and heated for a stronger glue joint.
  4. Glue is injected into the break.
  5. In most cases clamps are used however this was more of a fracture than a break so we chose a different way to hold the break in place while the glue sets. While this method may look like a torture devise it is clearly the best way for this situation. The pressure remains constant and uniform.
  6. A perfectly sealed joint, but we're not done yet. A graft will still be needed to ensure stability and unbreakable headstock, "unless he puts it in a blender."
  7. The glued headstock is placed in a jig so the reinforcement graft can be installed. This graft will intensify the strength of the joint.
  8. Approximately 1/16 to 1/8 of the back of the entire headstock to behind the nut are of the neck is routed out clean to house for the reinforcement graft.
  9. This is the graft, the serial number and personalized markings are first lasered in. The graft in it's beginning stage is rough but will be cut, fitted and epoxied to the necks profile before we seal and paint.
  10. The graft has been fitted, epoxied and formed to the headstock. Now we are ready to tap for machine head posts, mounting screws and then finally sand smooth and prep for lacquer
  11. A side view of the of the graft (with the machine head posts drilled). The seam is tight; the graft will make the headstock stronger than it was before.
  12. Sealed, lacquered and buffed to a beautiful factory shine. Our job is almost complete, after the machines are installed and the guitar is completely set up now with a reinforced headstock this guitar can look forward to a long playing life.
  13. A side view. The seem is almost undetectable.
  14. The end result a perfect repair, a guitar that will now last a life time, most importantly a happy and extremely satisfied client.
